Course content
Course description and content: Introduction to linguistics, theories of language origin, classification of languages, origin and development of writing, pre-historical linguistics, ancient linguistics, linguistics from the Middle Ages to the 18th century, historical and comparative grammar, new linguistic trends of the 19th century, Ferdinad de Saussure, Cobenhagen linguistic school and glossematics, Prague school of linguistics and functionalism, American structuralism and descriptivism, Noam Chomsky.

Course objectives: To define basic linguistic terms, To clarify basic theories of language origin, origin and development of writing, To explain the difference between typological and genetical classification of languages, To name language families and groups if Indo-European language family, To name and characterize individual phases of development of the Czech and worldwide linguistics, To assess the contribution of famous linguists, To analyse and evaluate the most important linguistic thoughts.
