Course content
Course description and content: Lexicology as a linguistic discipline. Its relation to lexicography and phraseology; philosophy and psychology. Lexical semantics. Word as a basic unit of language. The term language unit. Forms of language units. Notional and pragmatical part of word meaning. Layers of vocabulary. Semantic relations between lexical units. Lexical paradigms and syntagms. Ultimate examples of denotations. Indirect nomination, relations based on similarities. Word puns, language expressiveness. Phraseology and idiomatic expressions. Vocabulary dynamism. Lexicographic and etymological interpretation of word. Complex lexical analysis of text.

Course objectives: To define lexikology within the frameworkof linguistic disciplines and its terminology; To use knowledge of lexicography and types of dictionaries; To characterize the Czech thesaurus, To describe Czech vocabulary, To explain the kinds of word formation, To define relations between lexical units (synonyms/antonyms, homonyms/polysemy etc.), To define figures of speech (metaphor, metonymy etc.), To explain expressivity and aims of its expression, To identify development tendencies of Czech vocabulary.
