Course content
Course description and content Phonetics as a predecessor of phonology. Common goals and purposes. Graphic, phonematic and acoustic form of phonem. Organs of articulation. Phonem as a acoustic signal. Basic terms of acoustics. Phonem and its distinguishing function. Phonem and alophone. Phonological opposites. Neutralisation of honological opposites. Phonetic and phonological transcription. Czech vocalization and diphtongs. Cech consonants. Sonores and glides. Vocalic and consonant alternations. Phonological combinatorics. Phonostylistics. Syllable, its form and function. Speech articulation. Manifestation of phonemes in speech (assimilation, dissimilation, dieresis, epenthesis, metathesis). Expressing outer, inner and terminal hiats. Main and secondary accent. Pauses. Intonation (types of cadences, anti-cadence, semi-cadence). Dynamics of Czech phonological system. Segmental and suprasegmental analysis of text.

Course objectives: To provide segment analysis of spoken or written discourse, To provide suprasegmental analysis of spoken or written discourse, To demonstrate differencies between literary and colloquial Czech from the point of view of phonetic differencies, To classify types of consonants and vocals, To describe the proces of articulation and perception of sounds, To demonstrate differencies in pronunciation of consonants and vocals, To explain and demonstratedifferencies between phonemes, their variants and alophones.
