Course content
Basic knowledge about groups of materials - metals, ceramics, polymers, composites. It develops the general knowledge about materials, their properties, composition, internal structure and processes in materials. Polymers. Wood and wooden materials. Metal materials, internal structure, metal systems, equilibrium and disequilibrium diagrams, metals based on ferrous and non-ferrous metals, structural components, properties. Ceramics. Composites. Seminars - identification of wood, microscopic study of structure, technological and structural properties of wood. Steel and alloys, identification, study of structure - metalography, identification of plastic materials, tests of the basic mechanical properties - tension, hardness, notch impact strength, impact in bend.

Learning outcomes
The course aims at providing general, concise, methodologically oriented overview of materials and their use. Focus is on material characteristics and related changes of material properties.
