Course content
|
The seminars will focus on the following topics: Topics: 1. Sociology as a multiparadigmatic science, or "Why there is no single, universal sociological theory" 2. Social behavior, or "Why people do what they do" - behavior as a free individual action 3. Social behavior, or "Why people do what they do" - behavior as adaptation to the environment 4. Social institutions and their importance for life in society - school and family as social institutions 5. Culture and education - important categories (culture and cultural differences in school, enculturation and acculturation, school culture, specifics of family and upbringing given by culture) 6. School as an organization, or "What every employee should know before you start complaining about your superiors and subordinates" 7. The school class and family as social groups where socialization takes place, their structure and dynamics, and how to study them. 8. Sociometry as a tool for measuring relationships in a social group and what can be gleaned from sociometry. 9. Authority, not only of teachers, from the perspective of sociological theories - power as an important category of sociology, the question of the legitimacy of teachers' power. 10. Education and training from the perspective of sociology - a tool for socialization vs. a tool for social stratification 11. Critical theories of school - (the problem of capital and how to measure family capital) 12. Critical theories of school - (language codes and how to measure them) 13. Education and gender - specific perspective of gender theories on education and socialization - gender as a category in the analysis of curriculum.

Learning outcomes
|
The objectives of the subject Education and school from the point of view of sociology are: - Changing the lens through which sociology views education and school. The previous view was exclusively pedagogical (perhaps even a little psychological) and was based on selected contexts. Now, in this subject we will change the context and present education and school in different contexts. The above should be helpful to you in the preparation of your future diploma thesis, where, thanks to the sociological perspective on the issue of school and education, the theoretical base of the problem being processed will be expanded by other possible connections. - Acquisition of sociological terminology as a set of professional terms usable across social sciences. Sociology offers not only a change of perspective, but also a large group of professional terms that you can use in other subjects or in your qualification theses. However, it is not only about memorizing terms and their established definitions, but about understanding the way they are defined and possible limitations of their validity in connection with a specific sociological lens. - Understanding of the so-called sociological thinking. One of the significant representatives of sociology at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, the American-Polish sociologist Zygmund Bauman spoke about the so-called sociological thinking (he even dedicated an unconventional introduction to sociology to this topic entitled Thinking sociologically, selected passages of which can be found in the attached reading texts) . Here he presents not only a specific lens for looking at selected social phenomena, but also a specific way to think about society as independently, critically and without prejudices and stereotypes as possible. I believe that through this course you will understand the specifics of "sociological thinking" and use some of its methods in your thinking. - Acquisition of selected methods of investigation of selected phenomena from the field of education and education. Here, as part of the emphasis on the development of students' competencies, attention will be paid to practical examples of research procedures in the sense of "how, with what methods and techniques to investigate and learn about selected social phenomena".
After completing the course, the student will be able to: - use actively a selected set of sociological categories - based on your own assessment, create a draft of your own definition of these sociological categories - describe and clarify the relationships between these categories within the relational concept of social reality. - argue his/her/their own interpretation and definition of selected sociological categories - implement selected research procedures within the description and interpretation of selected social phenomena in connection with education and school.
