Course content
Art as a social phenomenon, the social function of art. Sociology of art as a genre of art-historical research: key theoretical concepts. The social role of the artist in society. Art Reception (autonomy of art, artistic consumption, preferences). Development of cultural industries and the history of electronic mass media. Functioning of the current cultural industries (production, promotion, marketing, target groups, new ways of distribution). Criticism of mass culture and cultural industries. Fundamentals of empirical research in sociology of art and culture. Contemporary Czech art culture in the light of empirical research.

Learning outcomes
The course focuses on theoretical approaches to culture and the arts as a social phenomenon. Gives the relationship concepts of culture and art from the perspective of sociological theory.
At the end of the course, students should be able to understand the important theoretical aproaches to art as a social phenomenon. Students will know the basic concepts and theories in the area of the sociology of art and they should be able to apply these theoretical instruments on particular problems of the art history and contemporary art industry.
