Course content
|
Gender studies and education: Introduction to the problem, defining of terminology and approaches. Interdisciplinary approach of gender issues. Education as a socialization process: biological and cultural determinants of education, gender socialization, gender stereotypes. Social role as a determinant of education. Identity as a problem of gender education. Historical concept and transformation of education from the gender perspective: socio-cultural constructs of society, medieval discourse, and modern discourse. The institutionalization of education: curricular differential of education of girls and boys, sexually homogeneous and heterogeneous classrooms. The current issue of gender education: defining of social roles, the influence of mass media on formation of contemporary youth gender identity. Czech school and the question of gender education. Gender differential in teacher's work.

Learning outcomes
|
After completing this course, the student will be able to: define the concept of gender and to characterize its interdisciplinary approach, explain the role of socialization in education from gender perspective, characterize the transformation of education in relation to changing discourses, evaluate and assess the current status of gender education at Czech schools, outline and apply possible solutions and methods of gender education in teacher?s practice.

Essay, Student performance
An essay on the topic of gender differences, discrimination between the sexes in the society and on the labor market.Monitoring and evaluation of individual work in a range of up to 7 pages of text will be made before granting credit.
