Course content
Presentation of the fundamental philosophical terminology concerning ethics, an overview of the philosophical theories, and historical development of the schools of ethics. Analysis of the ethical problems of the medical and nursery care practice. Importance of communication with a client, emphasis on the creation of the ethical relation in helping professions. Life protection in nursery care. Deontological medical codices and rights of the groups of diseased, ethical problems of euthanasia, dying, abortion, contraception, transplantation, alternative medicine. Chosen casuistries and model situations, solving the particular ethical issues.

Learning outcomes
After passing the course, students should be able to: - Define the basic philosophic terminology concerning ethics, - Describe the philosophical theories and historical development of schools of ethics, - Be aware of the life protection aspects concerning the field of study of nursery care, - Analyze the ethical problems of medical and nursery care practice, - Describe patient's rights, medical-ethical codices, - Apply the ethical principles in practice.
After passing the course, a student acquires competence to: - argumentation of aspects of life protection and ethical problems in medicine and nursing practice, - application of patients' rights, medical codes of ethics and ethical principles in practice.
Prerequisites
Basic orientation in the area of ethical approach to the individual and in connection with extending life expectancy in modern society.

Assessment methods and criteria
Student performance, Seminar Work

Student requirements: - Active participation in classes (recommended min. 70% participation in seminars). - Preparation of selected seminar paper and its active presentation in the seminar. Requirements for students with an individual study plan: full-time teaching in the amount of min. 20%, alternatively joint teaching with combined study - see the subject KAZ/ KNAS @, i.e. 4 hours of direct teaching according to the schedule; see above (identical requirements for credit and for the exam). Requirements for students during the implementation of the ERASMUS+ study stay: 1) As a substitute for participation in direct teaching: preparation of a semester paper on a given topic related to its specifics in the visited country and university and its submission to STAG, in the "Semester Paper" section under the abbreviation of the subject KAZ/PNAS@ by the deadlines set at the beginning of the semester. The scope of the work and its structure will be specified at the beginning of the semester via email communication using the student's generated email address in the UP Portal. 2) Completion of the course will take place after the student returns from the study stay to the Czech Republic in the same form as for full-time students on a specific date previously agreed with the student and entered into STAG.
