Course content
Introduction to the anthropology of human body, health and disease; biological connections of a human body; psychological connections of a human body; social, cultural and spiritual connections of a human body; body and physicality from the point of view of sociocultural anthropology; body and physicality from the point of view of human ethology; excursus to the history of medicine with connection to the history of anthropology; human body as a research subject ? from the past up to the present; sociocultural and spiritual determinants of health and disease ? different approaches to one?s health, to care of the health, to considering the disease etiology, disease diagnostics, it?s cure and treatment; traditional and non-traditional, classic and alternative medicincal, healing and laical care approaches towards a human during disease; human body anthropology, health and disease anthropology based on the examples of the studies of foreign and inland authors; Anthropology of a Body in Context of Modernity) from Davida Le Bretona (2003; orig. 1990)

Learning outcomes
The objective of this course is to comprehend the complex problematics of human body, health and disease form the point of view of the integral anthropology, with emphasis on it?s sociocultural components. The students familiarize with the biological essence of the body and physicality, in context of the genetical, inherited, and acquired ? meaning also the psychological, sociocultural and spiritual context of the human somatics. The human body, health and disease will be also discussed in historical connections ? from the point of view of the history of anthropology and medicine. We will engage with the sociocultural and spiritual determinants of health and disease (approach to one?s health, care for the health, considering the causes of diseases, it?s diagnostics, cure and treatment ? all in context of the integral anthropology) Based on the ?Anthropologie du corps et modernité? study (Anthropology of a Body in Context of Modernity) from Davida Le Bretona (2003; orig. 1990) and on studies of other foreign and inland authors, we will demonstrate some of the non-traditional approaches to the study of human body in the status of health or disease.
After absolving the course, students should be able to: ? Describe the basic approaches to the study of a human body. ? Characterize the human body from the sociocultural point of view ? as a instrument of culture and a source of cultural symbolism, as well as a significant means of communication. ? Explain the principles of a human body from the psychological, philosophical, spiritual and theological perspective - based on the human identity and it?s transformations. ? Describe the development of approaches to the study of a human body throughout the history ? magical medicine, archaic medicine, empirical medicine, and experimental medicine. ? Defend a holistic anthropological approach to the study of the human body in health and disease. ? Compare the approaches of the ?Western medicine? to alternative approaches to the human body, health and disease ? according to the concept of shared culture. ? Utilize the basic ideas of the David Le Breton?s concept and his body anthropology in the context of modernity in health education - through the demonstration of model examples.

Minimum of 80% attendance in the seminars. Requirements for the colloquium: choice of 1) a suitable book on the chosen topic concerning the anthropology of body, health and disease ? with student?s analysis. 2) a suitable video on the chosen topic concerning the anthropology of body, health and disease ? with student?s analysis. (precisely stated sources , aprox. range of 1-2 A4 pages). Student?s defence.
