Course content
|
The major part of the syllabus in the summer term will be the analysis of compound and complex sentences and the correct identification of subordinate clauses and their structure. Other, equally important, topics will be: word order, sentence condensation, nominal versus verbal trends in English and in Czech, functional sentence perspective and highlighting structures and the Czech one-element verbal sentences and their English equivalents. As in the winter term, students will test their knowledge of the information they have gathered in the analysis of simple and multiple sentences in seminars. They are also supposed to know the basic typological differences between the English and Czech languages.

Learning outcomes
|
This follow-up course concentrates on complex and compound sentences, types of subordinate clauses, ellipsis, highlighting structures and the role of sentence condensers, functional sentence perspective and punctuation. Emphasis is put on basic structural differences between the English and Czech languages.
Students will learn basic terminology of English syntax.
