Course content
This course is an introduction to the study of syntax. It focuses on principles of phrase and sentence structure, providing essential information on basic sentence elements, their syntagmatic and paradigmatic relations within sentences in English. Other topics will comprise constituency, parts of speech, the structure of the predicate according to the complementation of the verb by objects, adverbials and complements, thematic roles, adjectives and the structure of complex noun phrase.

Learning outcomes
The aims of the course are to introduce one of the linguistic disciplines - syntax - and its basic terminology, to make students understand the structure of a sentence, and help them identify its parts and their relations; to introduce the relations within the complex noun phrase and to introduce negation.
