Learning outcomes
This course builds on the Reading and Writing course from the previous semester but focuses specifically on academic writing. We will begin with a thorough consideration of a range of issues related to plagiarism, such as what it and how to avoid it, note-taking, summarising, paraphrasing, avoiding referencing, and the compilation of bibliographies. After this, through a series of exercises, both in class and as homework tasks, the course takes students from the construction of paragraphs up to a 1000-word argumentative essay. We will also deal with the structuring and organisation of arguments and how to write an effective introduction and conclusion. Throughout the course, attention is paid to training students in how to learn from their mistakes through guided self-correction.
