Narratives of Encounter. Early Colonial Literature. The Birth of a Nation and a Rise of a National Literature. Myths, stories, legends. American Romanticism. American Gothic. Late Romanticism. Transcendentalism. New poetic voices of America (W. Whitman, E. Dickinson).

Learning outcomes
|
This course is designed to provide a survey of American literature from the colonial times to the late 19th century. Significant poetry, drama and prose works will be studied. The goal of this course is to enhance students' ability to read critically. By the term's end, students should be familiar with different literary periods, the writers most associated with them and with the aims of a particular movement or school of thoughts. Course requirements to receive credits: to read and study assigned texts at home, to participate actively in the class discussions, to pass short tests in the course of the semester, to write an essay.
