Course content
The course is designed as a theoretical and practical unit that will enable students to understand the population approach to health as a social value. The course content consists of the main topics of the field of public health, namely the basics of epidemiology and hygiene, organization and financing of health care, and health protection and promotion. The key topics of the course are the laws of the spread of infectious diseases, prevention of the occurrence of hospital infections, analysis and assessment of the health status of the population, the occurrence and possibilities of prevention of civilization diseases, factors of the living and working environment and their influence on health. The course includes current trends in the development of health systems on a European and global scale. It provides knowledge in the protection and promotion of health at the national level.

Learning outcomes
The causes and prevention of the most common diseases and injuries in the population and in health care professionals are taught. A healthy lifestyle and personal responsibility of an individual for his/her health are stressed.
On completion of the course, the optometry assistant will be familiar with the current epidemiological situation in the country, pursue a healthy lifestyle and encourage others to do so, and create a healthy working environment.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of microbiology.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam

An active students´ participation in the lectures and seminars.
