Course content
Rules for collecting and transporting infectious material into the laboratory. Safety rules for working with infectious material. Overview of microbiological examination methods. Morphology of bacteria and viruses. Types of microscopic preparations, principles of the most important staining methods. Metabolism of bacteria. Bacterial culture, growth curve. Pathogenicity and virulence of microbes. Ecology of microbes. Microorganisms in healthy humans. Antibiotics - classification, characteristics of the most important groups. Adverse effects of antibiotics. Bacterial resistance. Gram-positive bacteria, the most important staphylococcal and streptococcal infections. Gram-negative bacteria and their clinical significance. Anaerobic bacteria and their clinical significance. Mycobacteria, tuberculosis. Fungal infections. Selected chapters from special virology. Disinfection and sterilization. Endogenous and exogenous infections. Nosocomial infections.Structure and function of immune system, its regulation.

Learning outcomes
Students are exposed to the principles of work safety at a hazardous workplace, gain detailed knowledge of proper collection and forwarding of infectious material. They are introduced to the most important microbiological laboratory techniques and essential general properties of microorganisms. They gain basic knowledge of the pathogenesis, clinical features and epidemiology of infectious diseases,
The students will be able to implement the acquired knowledge and skills in midwifery practice.
