Course content
|
A view of sources and methodology of special medical and health information in Internet environment with special regard to typology, quality and documents availability. Interactive training will be focused on search strategy in MEDLINE databases based on definition of clinical question in PICO form (patient-intervention-comparison-outcome) according to principles of evidence-based medicine. Evaluation of search results will carry out according to evidence pyramid. Students will acquire basic orientation in sense of systematic views for health care of concrete patient. During tutorial the students pass practical illustration of crucial analyses of original scientific message about clinical trial. At the end, quality evaluation of the document search will be carried out by means of bibliographic methods (citation analysis, journal impact factor).

Learning outcomes
|
Students will obtain a view of the basics of searching electronic information resources, general rules of search methods, search strategies, keywords and MeSH thesaurus. They will also learn to work with the KUP catalogue, the portal Knihovny.cz, learn what an ILL (interlibrary loan services) is. The portal Ezdroje.upol.cz, licensed resources at Palacky University, or remote access to licensed resources will be demonstrated in detail and in practice. They will also learn to work with free available resources Google Scholar, PubMed and Medvik. Basic medical resources and how to work with them or databases for evidence-based medicine will be demonstrated. Students will also learn about citation databases, evaluation of scholarly quality of journals and publishing activities of an author and how to work with these instruments. Another topic of the course will be Open Access and citation, evaluation of information on the Internet or rules for writing an scholarly article.
The students will be able to orientate in valuable medical information acquisition from Internet, use medical search engines, all in accord to principles of evidence-based medicine.

Students ought to have fundamental attainments in informatics and computer technology at the secondary education level.
