Course content
Technique of punctions and biopsies. Diagnostic significance of selected organ biopsies. Biopsies in gastroenterology - diagnostic of inflammatory and neoplastic processes, problematics of polyposis, some rare affections, liver biopsy and the diagnostic of cirrhosis. Trepanobiopsy of bone marrow and sternal punction - significance for genetics, organ transplantations, oncologic haematology, study of genetic abnormalities. Lumbal punctions and the diagnostic of meningitis. Blood taking, blood cell count, haemocoagulation, biochemistry, immunology.

Learning outcomes
The aim of this subject is to inform the students in four lessons about diagnostic and therapeutic significance of cytologic, bioptic and other punctional investigations in all the basic medical sectors. In the first part, the participants will be informed about the possibilities of of taking diagnostic tissue specimens as well as aspirates from the lymph nodes, thyroid gland, bone marrow, liver, kidneys and gastrointestinal tract (GIT). In the second part, the techniques of pleural, pericardial and ascitic fluid punction for therapeutic purposes will be demonstrated. Particular emphasis will be dedicated also to the diagnostic importance of cerebrospinal fluid collection for the detection of meningococcal meningitis. The immediately following practical part of the issue (two hours) is intended on the acquisiton of technical abilities; as the minimum, students should be able to carry out independently venipunctures with collection of blood samples for the pertinent examinations. After having passed this lesson, they may apply for colloquium with the examiner.
The acquired informations will enable the students under direct supervision of their expert teachers to a guided performance of all the above mentioned interventions.
