Course content
Main topics: Definition of the discipline, organization, ethics, codes of ethics, legal issues and documentation of care. Anesthesia: - Division, pharmaceuticals, management, monitoring, risks and complications. - Anesthesia in the various disciplines. - Pre-anaesthetic preparation of the patient, anaesthetic ambulance. - Regional anesthesia, outpatient anesthesia, postoperative pain management. Resuscitation and intensive care: - Patient monitoring in intensive care . - Cardiopulmonary resuscitation in children and adults, emergent and extended, non-initiation and termination. - Shock conditions. Acid-base disturbances. Vasoactive and fluid therapy. - Diagnosis of brain death, organ donor care, transplantation. - Airway management and basics of mechanical ventilation. - Nursing care of the unconscious patient. - Nutritional support in intensive care. - Specifics of intensive care for the patient with brain injury. - Control and prevention infection in the critically ill patient in the intensive care unit.

Learning outcomes
The course is a part of a complex of courses in clinical nursing. It is designed as a theoretical and practical unit with emphasis on the latest findings in emergency medicine. It provides students with the basics of intensive care, anaesthesiology, resuscitation and critical care. Focuses on the fundamentals of providing intensive nursing care for acute, life-threatening conditions in patients with failing basic life signs.
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to independently provide both CPR. They will be able to independently diagnose basic vital signs disorders and know the principles of their management. They will know the procedures of nursing care of a critical ill patient. They will be able to understand basic anaesthetic procedures including pre-anaesthetic assessment and preparation of the patient for anaesthesia.
