Course content
Organization of neonatology. Division of prenatal period and classification of newborns- stages of the neonatal period, classification of newborns according to birth weight - gestational age relation. Distinctive anatomical and physiological features of a mature and immature newborn, early postpartum period, clinical features of postnatal adaptation and thermoregulation Most common pathologies in newborns. Neonatal asphyxia and resuscitation, hypoxia evaluation, resuscitation, long-term damage. Birth trauma- classification of the most common postnatal traumas. Infant's pain. Congenital developmental defects. Hyperbilirubinemia in newborns, hemolytic disease of newborns. Ethical issues in care of the newborn, communication with parents, newborn death. Particularities of the assessment of the needs, nursing diagnostics, objectives, interventions a nursing plan with educational elements towards mother, evaluation of nursing outcomes, demonstration of nursing activities in clinical conditions.

Learning outcomes
The course is focused on initial care of a newborn, care of a physiological newborn.
Students will be able: to provide care to the newborn, they will learn to assess the actual condition and adaptation reactions of the newborn; to provide care to at-risk newborns, they will acquire more detailed knowledge of diagnostics and therapy in care of at-risk newborns and to apply valid legislation in mother and child care.
