Course content
The importance of transcultural-multicultural nursing, Leininger's conceptual model. Definition of culture, ethnicity, society, common and different features. Notion of invariability of dominant group. Culture and ethnicity in interpersonal relationships and in the family. Cultural and ethnic dimensions of health, disease, death. Rituals. Multicultural society - consequences for health/nursing services. Multicultural society in the Czech Republic. Different cultural perception of the occupation of a nurse, carer. Ethnocentrism and its consequences in the nursing process. Intercultural communication problems, means facilitating intercultural communication. Problems of old age, mentally and physically handicapped - their modification by culture. Spiritual life of a human being - content, meaning, basic religious movements and rules regulating the behaviour of their members. Significant religious rituals.

Learning outcomes
Students are taught selected terminology relevant to transcultural nursing - ethnicity, culture, spirituality, faith, religion - and they are presented with basic characteristics of selected ethnic, cultural and religious groups. They are provided with the initial knowledge necessary for their ability to adapt the nursing process in clients while respecting their ethnic, cultural and spiritual background.
On completion of the course, students are expected: to be able to correctly grasp the concepts of ethnicity, culture, spirituality, belief, religion; to know the basic characteristics of selected ethnic, cultural, and religious groups; and be able to adapt the nursing process for it to meet the clients' specific ethnic, cultural and spiritual needs.
