Course content
|
Main topics: Rules of correct nutrition, nutritional recommendations, recommended nutritional values for each age category. - Nutrition of new-borns and infants. Breastfeeding, the composition of mother's milk, the importance and support of breastfeeding. Feeding on baby formula. - Examination of nutritional state, methods for nutritional assessment, anthropometric, biochemical, haematological and immunologic examinations. Nutritional prognostic indexes. - Eating disorders and educational programmes in nutrition. - Child obesity and the significance for the child's quality of life, prevention and treatment. - Child nutrition in a septic condition, on artificial ventilation, parenteral nutrition.

Learning outcomes
|
The course gives comprehensive information about child nutrition that respects bodily growth and psychic development. It deals with the setting of basal metabolism and actual energetic needs required for the child's activity including basic nutrients (proteins, fats, carbohydrates). Emphasis is put on the nutritional requirements of children in each age category (with special focus nutrition of a new-borns and infants), assessment of the child's nutritional state in cooperation with a nutrition therapist and the importance of nutritional counselling. The course includes an overview of products for enteral and parenteral nutrition, forms of nutrition application in healthcare institutions as well as in home environment. The course emphasises the role of nutrition in pathophysiology and the prevention of diseases in child age. It deals with the risks of malnutrition and excessive nutrition in different age categories. What is stressed is the importance of nutrition as a significant factor in the prevention of lifestyle disease.
After completion, the students will be able to: - give an overview of nutritional rules in each age category with special focus on children - analyse the nutritional state of the child - identify pathological conditions in the area of nutrition in children.

Prerequisites

Prerequisite for a successful completion is knowledge of nutrition physiology and knowledge of nutrition from secondary school.
