Topics of seminars and practical lectures: 1.Basics of Medical psychology -Subject of Medical psychology -Scientific research -The individual in the health care system -Adherence to healthy lifestyle habits 2.Stress, pain and coping strategies -Definition, measurement and stress management -Significance and pain coping -Compliance -Placebo effect -Assessment of alternative approaches 3.Approach and coping with chronic diseases - attitudes / behaviour affecting: -Cardiovascular disease -Cancer -Life with a chronic illness -Patient's conception of the disease 4.Terminal illness -Attitude of the individual to the illness -Thanatology -Hospice care 5.Healthy and harmful lifestyle -Tobacco smoking -Consumption of alcohol and other drugs -Eating and its effect on body weight -Regular physical activity / exercise 6.Healthcare Communications -Relationship of healthcare professional and patient -Crisis intervention -Mental hygiene of a healthcare professional -Burnout 7.Vision for the future -Topics and future directions of Medical psychology field The total hours for the course is 54, of which in-person classes 30 and home-prep classes 24.

Learning outcomes
The course has theoretical and practical structure. It deals with the issue of the patient psychology. It aims at better understanding of the patient, his needs and problems, which the illness brings. The course Medical psychology deepens the knowledge that is important for professional coping with the difficult situation in the care of patients, persons with disabilities and patients in palliative care. An important topic of medical psychology are the basic factors leading to the development of healthy habits and a healthy lifestyle.
The aim of the course is to understand the influence of biopsychosocial factors on well-being, comprehend the nature of the stress response and the impact of long-term stress on the development and course of different types of illness. Learn psychological and medical methods and their effectiveness in alleviating pain. Recognize the impact of chronic or life-threatening illnesses on the psyche of the patient and the close family. Understand the basic factors that help the patient to follow the treatment regimen, the experience of treatment in hospital facilities, the sources of potential problems between the healthcare professional and the patient and the importance of mutual communication.
