The course will take place on 15 October 2024 in the Faculty of Arts building at Křížkovského 10, room 2.25 (conference room, 1st floor, back of the building). Lecturers: prof. Alison Steven (UK); prof. Annamaria Bagnasco (IT); assoc. prof. Peta Jane Greaves, (UK). After a brief introduction to the different types of tools and instruments used in health and social research, there will be 3 interactive sessions, each building on the previous one and introducing students to some of the basics of questionnaire design. Programme 9:00 - 16:30 Session A: How to use existing data to formulate questions and parts of a questionnaire This session will explore the use of existing research findings and data (e.g. qualitative data from focus groups or interviews) as a basis for developing a questionnaire-type instrument. It will also address the different types of questions or items that can be used, considerations and issues to be aware of, risks and errors in question development, etc. In groups, students will be able to work with existing data/findings and have the opportunity to practice developing several questions. If students have their own finding/date or a finding/date that they are specifically interested in, they can bring it with them to the session or the lecturers will provide some findings from our research studies. Session B: Pre-testing of questions/questionnaires. This session will cover methods for "pre-testing" questions and instruments. Students will be introduced to a range of methods, including the use of cognitive (think-aloud) interviewing, and will explore: how to organize and conduct a think-aloud interview/session, how to capture the data collected, and how to then use the results to feed back into issues when refining the instrument. Students will again consider approaches in groups and 'try out' the methodology themselves to get an idea of how it works. Session C: Reflections on tool validation. This session will look at different types of validity to consider, what they relate to, how they can be ensured/tested or assessed - ways of 'validating' different types of tools. Again, in groups students will consider how they might plan and undertake testing of a tool.
