Course content
The courses will take place on 31st October 2023 in the Faculty of Arts building on Křížkovského 10, room 2.25 (conference room, 1st floor, rear part of the building). Teachers: prof. Alison Steven, Ph.D.; doc. Peta Jane Greaves, Ph.D. Program: 9:00 - 12:00 Theory in research: Peeling back the layers Exploring qualitative methodologies In the morning students will learn about the different types and 'levels' of theory related to research: theories underpinning our ways of viewing the things we wish to research, the perspectives we take, and the research approaches we use. This will include thinking about the different philosophical and theoretical perspectives which support quantitative and qualitative research, and which orientate the way we frame research aims and/or questions. Some common qualitative methodologies will be presented and explored. 12:00 - 13:00 Break 13:00 - 16:00 Exploring mixed methods research: Theory and design Using qualitative and mixed methods: Experience of application and issues In the afternoon workshop students will look in detail at the notion of mixed methods research, exploring some of the theoretical aspects and design features of such studies. They will be given real life examples of mixed methods studies, examine some of the issues that my arise, the strengths and difficulties involved. Throughout the session will be lots of opportunity for interaction, activities, discussion and questions.

It is a one-day course on research theory and methodology for all PhD students of Palacký University Olomouc. The course is taught in English.
