Learning outcomes
The course combines practical experience in the field with profound theoretical background of the conception of sport-for-development initiatives across various EU countries and EU policies. It involves analysing the EU sport-for-development field and its cooperation with NGOs and the public sector within the EU. The course will be taught simultaneously at both the Faculty of Physical Culture and the Faculty of Science catering to two distinct groups of students. Throughout the semester, these student groups will meet several times to discuss the topics covered in class and to visit local activities using sport for developmental goals. As a part of their assignment, students will actively work with data from various sources, analyse and discuss them in class. The semester will culminate in a joint field trip to Prague, where students will visit different sports organizations and institutions. By engaging in discussions with hosting organizations (such as the Czech Olympic Committee, Fair Play Point, Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports), students will have the opportunity to reflect on the knowledge acquired during classes and witness real-world policy and project implementation in the field. Additionally, the course content will be enriched through online inputs provided by various stakeholders in the EU sport-for-development field, including universities, NGOs, and policymakers. Key topics covered will include the EU perspective on using sport as a tool for broader development, Sport for Development practices in different EU countries and their respective policies, the role of sport in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), migration and its implications for the EU, potential applications of sport in promoting inclusion (with real examples from the EU context), Sport for Development within the EU NGO sector, EU institutions and their agendas related to sport, social cohesion from the EU perspective, and the utilization of sport in addressing disability issues from an EU standpoint.
The student has mastered basic concepts from the sport for development field, and practical knowledge of specific methods and research designs used in the sport for development. He/she also has an overview of various strategies and documents utilising the potential of sports in selected countries and the EU.
