Course content
1. Basic concepts 2. Map projections. 3. Content and content of maps. 4. Types of maps. 5. Character key, map legend. 6. Means of expression in maps. 7. Use of maps. 8. Orientation in the landscape according to the map. 9. Compass, compass, azimuth. 10. Determining the sides of the world without a compass. 11. Global positioning system, meaning, history. 12. GPS segments. 13. Possible sources of GPS error. 14. Other localization systems. 15. GPS position detection and finding.

Learning outcomes
The course focuses on practical procedures in using maps in landscape. The topics of the procedures include the following: map symbol key, mathematical elements of map content, altimetry in maps, measurement in maps, cartographic generalization, drawing in maps, etc. Practical assignments are thoroughly based on theoretical knowledge. The practical part of the course is performed both in classes and in the field. Information about this course was translated to English within the project Internationalization of the Faculty of Physical Culture, Palacký University, Olomouc, No. CZ.1.07/2.2.00/28.0028, co-funded by the European Social Fund and the Government of the Czech Republic.
1. Based on the principal concepts from the area of cartography the student is able to read maps and derive basic information for own profession. 2. The student should be able to demonstrate a maximum degree of spatial imagination in landscape based on the information studied from a map. 3. The student should be able to draw selected information in a map according to the principles of cartographic semiotics.
