Annotation: The subject Disability studies (DS) is to (a) provide general introduction to DS, basic terminology; (b) provide information about DS systems and possible areas of use, principles of DS; (c) introduce DS through the life span (preschool, school education/psychology; adult education/psychology, education/psychology of elderly - gerontopedagogy/psychology); (d) describe and explain connections and interfaces of DS and world of physical activities, sport (e) prepare students to evaluate the outcomes of their work in connection with ethics, diversity vocabulary and practice. Topics of lectures: 1. General introduction to DS, history and philosophy of DS. 2. Fundamental principles of DS. 3. Educational systems in the Czech Republic, Europe and selected countries worldwide and field of DS 4. Models of disability and their impact on DS 5. International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) 6. Legislation and DS 7. Sport and DS 8. Culture and DS 9. Evaluative strategies - DS 10. Project work

Disability studies (DS) are an interdisciplinary area of study based in the humanities and social sciences that views disability in the context of culture, society, and politics rather than through the lens of medicine. We are connecting field of DS with sport and PA. This course aims to introduce students to the central role of diversity in DS research and in other work fields of DS. Diversity can consist of differences either with respect to cultural context or with respect to status positions of individuals and groups as related to their gender, socio-economic class, ethnicity, or sexual orientation; diversity can also be constituted by cultural changes and contact between cultures. The course starts out with a general orientation into the ways in which views on disability are constituted by culture and society. This orientation will be followed by a more detailed discussion of consequences in education (PE lessons), leisure time PA, sport and personal (active) life.
Upon completion of the course the student will be able to: 1. Understand the basics of disability studies (DS). 2. Apply the knowledge of DS in daily thoughts about diversity of the clients in school practice, field of sport or other areas (teacher, coach, physiotherapist, social worker); 3. Apply the information about DS in a wide range of intervention (type of disability, age) 4. To use critical thinking.
