Course content
The seminar covers major developments and authors in the field of Dutch and Flemish literature in the Middle Ages, Renaissance and so-called Golden Age: - survey of the most important hand books. - Chivalric epic (Karel ende Elegast) - Arthurian legends (Walewein), Oriental novels (Floris ende Blancefloer) - Animal epic (Vanden Vos Reinaerde) and moralist literature - legends, so-called Abele Spelen (Lanceloet van Denemerken) and Miracle plays (Mariken van Nieumeghen) - Chambers of Rhetoric, beginnings of printing (Van der Mollen feeste) - Songs from the Uprising against Spain, translations of the Bible (Geuzenliedboek) - Renaissance literature. Hooft, Cats and Vondel (Josef in Dothan) - Sailors' adventures (Bontekoe, Journael) - Women Writers of the 17th. Century (Tesselschade Roemers Visscher) and Jewish literature

Learning outcomes
During the winter term the students will get an overview of the main literary tendencies in Dutch and Flemish literature from the beginnings of the Middle Ages (ca. 1170) till the end of the 17th century. Attention will be vowed to an analysis of literary works that play an important role as well as to important developments in culture and society.
Those who have attended the course will become familiar with the most important trends in Dutch and Flemish literature till the end of the 17th century.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of Dutch (A2 CEFR); knowledge of basic literary concepts at secondary school level; successfully completion of the course Introduction to the Study of Dutch and Flemish Literature (1uvlt). Presence in the lessons, maximum allowed absence is twice per semester. During the semester, the student should read 5 literary books in Dutch, compile and deliver readers' diaries.

Assessment methods and criteria
Student performance

Attendance in hours (maximum absence twice per semester) Completing homework. Reading at least 5 books in Dutch during the semester, writing and delivery of readers' diaries. Successful completion of the final test at the end of the term.
