Course content
|
1. Introductory Session: Course overview and completion requirements. Basics of critical reading: What do we already know? 2. Text as an Object of Study: What is (and is not) a text; text vs. discourse. 3. Basic Approaches to Text in Social Sciences: Lateral reading. 4. Reception and Interpretation Processes, Reader Types: The naive and semiotic reader (Eco). 5. Communicative Approach to Text: Core criteria of textuality. 6. Author and Authorship: The author as a function of text, the "death of the author," the media producer, and transformations of authorship in electronic media. 7. Membership Categorization Analysis (MCA). 8. Institutional Dialogue Analysis I: Ethnomethodological Conversation Analysis (CA). 9. Institutional Dialogue Analysis II: Political interviews and quantitative questioning analysis. 10. Talk Shows and its Variations: Differences from "hard talks." 11. Critical Discourse Analysis: Core definitions of discourse and principles of critical analysis. 12. Final Student Presentations: Text analysis project presentations. 13. Course Wrap-Up: Summary, review, and semester reflection.

Learning outcomes
|
The goal of the course is to introduce students to contemporary approaches to text within the social sciences, providing them with a conceptual framework for comprehensive text analysis. Issues surrounding text and the possibilities for its analysis will be presented within the context of media and cultural studies.
Students are familiar with core research traditions and approaches to text and discourse analysis. Students can distinguish between different approaches and research traditions in text theory and apply them appropriately based on the topic. Students are able to read and comprehend academic texts by key authors. Students are able to critically evaluate concepts within text theory. Students are able to apply analytical frameworks to selected text types of their choice and discuss their findings in an appropriate manner.

Basic familiarity with qualitative research methods in the social sciences.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Written exam, Final Report
Requirements for Course Credit: 1. Regular attendance at lectures (maximum of 2 absences allowed). 2. Knowledge of assigned readings. 3. Completion of ongoing assignments during the semester by the specified deadlines. Exam Requirements: 1. A written exam covering the topics discussed during the given academic year.
