Course content
|
1. Course Introduction: Overview of course content and completion requirements. 2. Core Concepts of Textual Analysis: Text, discourse, methodology, and analysis; typology of analytical approaches (bridging theoretical models with empirical research). 3. Empirical Study of Text: Functions of text as a research object; text as representation; sampling strategies and corpus selection in qualitative text analysis. 4. Multimodal Text Analysis I: Foundations of visual semiotics and the grammar of visual design (layout, typography, image-text relations). 5. Multimodal Text Analysis II: Analyzing dynamic and digital texts (audiovisual media, social media multimodal structures). 6. Multimodal Text Analysis III: Applied workshop: Practical multimodal analysis of contemporary media texts. 7. Media Dialogue Analysis I: Core principles of conversation analysis in media (turn-taking systems, institutional roles, interactional norms and practices). 8. Media Dialogue Analysis II: Genre specifics: News interviews and political questioning. 9. Media Dialogue Analysis III: Genre specifics: Talk shows, entertainment formats, and differences from "hard talk." 10. Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) I: Theoretical foundations (discourse, power, ideology) and comparison of key traditions (Fairclough, Van Dijk, Wodak). 11. Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) II & Workshop: Practical application of CDA to contemporary media texts and peer feedback. 12. Student Project Presentations: Presentation and discussion of student analytical projects. 13. Course Wrap-Up: Summary, final evaluation of student work, and semester reflection.

Learning outcomes
|
The goal of the course is to introduce students to selected types of textual analysis in the social sciences, providing them with a conceptual framework for comprehensive, interdisciplinary text and discourse analysis. The course is designed for students who have completed the introductory Theory of Text course and wish to deepen their knowledge and skills in social science text analysis.
Students are familiar with major methods and techniques of chosen types of textual analyses in the contexts of social sciences. Student are able to apply methods of textual analysis when analyzing current cultural and media issues.

REQUIREMENTS FOR OBTAINING CREDIT: 1. Attendance at seminars, with up to two unexcused absences allowed; any additional absences must be properly justified. 2. Completion of partial tasks related to the individual steps of text analysis. COLLOQUIUM 1. Analysis of a text of your own choosing. Written presentation of the analysis results and an oral presentation in the seminar.
