Learning outcomes
The course provides a foundational insight into media and their function and role in society. Its objective is to offer students a comprehensive overview of the field of media studies and its core theoretical challenges. Students will explore the roles media play in society, the theoretical perspectives used to analyze them, the key societal impacts of media exposure, the concepts of media audience(s), and the history of mass media. Additionally, the course addresses the specific characteristics of various media formats and contents (such as news reporting and new media) and introduces the fundamentals of media content analysis.
Students are acquitanced with the central themes and concepts related to the study of media. Students are familiar with the contemporary approaches in cultural studies.
Prerequisites
The course provides a basic insight into the problems of media and their status and functioning in society. Students learn the basic concepts, categories and disciplines that can be seen in the study of contemporary media.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written exam

The requirements for earning credit are: 1. attendance (a maximum of two absences is permitted) and 2. active preparation for lectures, which is assessed on an ongoing basis through tests. To earn credit, students must achieve an overall score of 70% on both teststhe midterm and the final. The exam will be administered in written form.
