Course content
|
1. Introductory Session: Overview of the course syllabus and completion requirements. 2. Nonverbal Communication vs. Nonverbal Behavior: Terminology discussion and core approaches. 3. History of Nonverbal Communication Research. 4. Popular Myths and Misconceptions: Mehrabian's myth of nonverbal communication. 5. The Human Face in Nonverbal Communication: Categorization and perspectives in facial research. 6. Facial Expressions and Emotion: Expression of basic emotions, measurement tools, introduction to FACS (Facial Action Coding System), and micro-expression analysis. 7. Smiling and Laughter. 8. Studying Gestures I: Methodologies and analytical frameworks. 9. Studying Gestures II: Typology of gestures. 10. Nonverbal Deception Detection. 11. Touch and Contact Behavior: Tactile communication (haptics). 12. Intercultural Perspectives on Nonverbal Communication: Haptics and proxemics. 13. Course Wrap-Up: Final evaluation of student work and semester reflection.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to outline the main topics of nonverbal communication and students will be acquitanted with common methods. The course will also outline an overview of empirically derived facts about non-verbal means of communication. Research methods will be supplied by specific examples and the students will be encouraged to explore their own point of view in this field. Nonverbal communication will be held in more broadly sense than taking the traditional concept of "body language". All nonverbal cues used in communication (in mediated as well as non-mediated interaction) will be included.
1. Applies selected anaLytical approaches to the observation and interpretation of nonverbal cues in real-life, professional, and media situations. 2. Critically analyzes the nonverbal behavior of communicators with regard to context, relational dimension, and culture. 3. Critically evaluates the evidence-based validity of information and sources dedicated to body language, distinguishing them from popular science or commercial literature. 4. Is able to record and evaluate the specific features of nonverbal cues in natural conversation and media environments.

**CREDIT REQUIREMENTS:** 1. Regular active participation in the seminar (a maximum of 2 unexcused absences allowed; additional absences must be officially documented). 2. Preparation for seminars, i.e., knowledge of assigned readings and the ability to discuss them in class. 3. Willingness to participate in practical activities related to the topics covered (applying theoretical knowledge in practice). 4. Completion of continuous assignments in Moodle during the semester (max. 3 assignments per semester). **COLLOQUIUM REQUIREMENTS:** 1. Oral presentation on a pre-selected topic (or micro-project). 2. Preparation of written summary points/theses for the oral presentation for other course participants.
