The aim of the course is to introduce students to the ways journalists are portrayed in pop culture (films, TV shows, books and songs). The first part of the course will introduce existing knowledge about the portrayal of journalistic professions and thus provide students with a basis for discussion in the second part of the course, which will be based on English examples of pop culture works across genres. The end of the course is reserved for examples from works originating in the countries of the students in the course and the Czech Republic in order to compare different ways of portraying journalists across the world. Students will be recommended literature and specific films to watch for each lesson, but the seminar will be based primarily on frontal teaching (lectures, screenings of film excerpts).
The graduate of the course will be familiar with a broad variety of way to portray journalist - from romantic comedies characters to investigate reporters history of the cinemas discussed and their cultural specificities. "The cinema produced by a given society at a given time is one source of data on how that society views itself - in this case, its journalists, and also the publics who consume journalism, in so far as the tastes and demands of audiences determine to some extent which films are made." (McNair 2010:15)
