Course content
1. Introductory lesson, course content and requirements. 2. Content analysis theory and method: defining the research method and the theoretical foundations of content analysis 3. Selection of a research topic, formulation of hypotheses and research questions. 4. Selection of media texts for analysis selecting a relevant sample for comparative quantitative research on television news coverage by national Czech television stations 5. Data structure and coding bookcreating a data structure, defining the categories under study (relevance, thematic structure, database of subjects, etc.) 6. Coding and Codebook beginning coding, updating the data structure and coding manual 7. Coding and Codebook continuing coding, updating the data structure and coding manual 8. Coding and Data Compilation completing coding, data validity and reliability, data verification 9. Data Analysis and Basics of Using Excel I. (pivot tables, charts, bulk data operations, ...) 10. Data Analysis and Basics of Using Excel II. (pivot tables, charts, bulk data operations, ...) 11. Data interpretation creating the structure of the final report, preparing a presentation, and interpreting the results 12. Preparing the final report and presenting the research results 13. Learning outcomes
After the necessary theoretical determination method of content analysis, the course aims to create virtually comparative analysis of television news. Analytical seminar will follow-up steps, which correspond to the themes of each seminar meeting, proceed to the actual presentation of the obtained results, interpretation of data and technical, graphical and textual processing analysis. The subject content analysis of the quantitative comparison of specific publicized events, and media texts will be studied news reports of three Czech national television stations: public television and its CT Events, TV News TV Nova and Prima TV News. Students will have the opportunity from a certain perspective, consider the differences in commercial and public news and background theoretical knowledge from other courses of the study program to interpret the data and possibly later created a method to apply to media texts examined in this thesis.
To apply qualitative, quantitative and comparative research methodology and empirical data collection techniques in communication and media research.
Prerequisites
Basic skills with MS Office; ability to work with academic texts.

Assessment methods and criteria
Student performance, Seminar Work

Credit: Active participation of students in quantitative research. Timely performance of assigned tasks. Cooperation in the development of methodology, defining key terms of research, quality and accurate coding of analyzed media texts. Participation in seminars (75%). colloquium: Submission of research papers in Word or PowerPoint, personal presentation and defense of the research.
