The frame plan for the lectures: 1. Palatalization of velar sounds. 2. Palatalizatin of consonants before jot sounds. 3. Old Slavonic methathesis of vowels. Process of depalatalization. 4. The Old Slavonic graphemes and their phonetic features. The origin of Old Slavonic sounds. 5. New sound in Old Slavonic. 6. Intonation and accent in Old Slavonic. 7. The common features of the three branches of Slavic languages. 8. Old Slavonic and Great Moravia. 9. The origin of Old Slavonic alphabet. 10. Written monuments in Cyrillic and Glagolitic alphabet. 11. Variants of Old Slavonic. Old Church Slavonic. 12. The outline of Slavonic languages and alphabets. 13. Credit session.

Learning outcomes
|
Students will further develop their knowledge of Slavic studies. In these lectures we shall talk about the characteristics of Old Slavonic phonology, morphology and lexicology. Students will be presented with the oldest Slavonic alphabets: the Glagolitc alphabet and Cyrilic script. The lectures are focused on explaining the phonological, grammatical and lexical specific features of the oldest written Slavonic language, the Old Slavonic, in comparison with the present-day national Slavonic languages, esp. with Czech.
Students will be presented with the oldest written Slavonic language ? the Old Slavonic. They will learn how to read simple Old Slavonic texts, translate and analyse them.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Oral exam, Written exam
Preparedness for each lesson, preparing a presentation on a given topic, understanding the flexion of Old Slavonic nominative parts of speech, submitting an essay (translation and analysis of Old Slavonic text), passing the colloquium.
