The frame plan for the lectures: 1. Slavic studies as a scholarly discipline. 2. Indo-European language family and Slavic languages. 3. Indo-Europan origins. 4. Centum languages. 5. Satem languages. 6. Balto-Slavonic language unity. 7. Nostratic languages. 8. Balkan language union. 9. The origin of Slavic peoples. 10. Periodization of Old Slavonic. 11. The significance of historical-comparative method for determination of kinship between languages. 12. Changes in sounds happening due to the law of open syllables. 13. Credit test.

Learning outcomes
|
This course presents the students with a basic knowledge of Old Slavonic. The lectures are focused on the characteristics of Old Slavonic phonology, morphology and lexicology. The aim of this course is to present the students with the oldest written Slavonic language ? the Old Slavonic. Students will learn how to read simple Old Slavonic texts, translate and analyse them. We shall also deal with the grammar system of Old Slavonic. Special attention is paid to the etymology of words coming from Old Slavonic.

|
Oral exam, Written exam
Preparedness for each lesson, preparing a presentation on a given topic, understanding the flexion of Old Slavonic nominative parts of speech and passing the credit test.
