Course content

The essence and function of language. The notion, content and methods of linguistics. Synchrony and diachrony. Language as system. Langue and parole. Language sign. The centre and the periphery. Typological and genealogical classification of languages. Marginal linguistic disciplines. Script, Slavonic script, orthography. The principles of the Russian orthography. Russian linguistics before 1917, Russian linguistic schools. Mladogramatisms. Structuralisms. Generative grammar. Linguistic scholarly journals. Prominent Russian, Czech and Slovak linguists. Organization of linguistic life in Czech Republic, Russia and in the world.

Learning outcomes
|
This course is designed for new students of Russian philology and should grant them with a general knowledge of the theoretical basis for linguistic studies. Students will get familiar with the basic linguistic terminology both in Russian and Czech, with the content of the separate linguistic disciplines and with the basic structure of the system of language, with language classification and with important linguistic schools.
Getting familiar with linguistic terms, schools, approaches and the development of linguistics as a science and its separate disciplines. Students will acquire the knowledge necessary for further linguistic studies.

Prerequisites

Designed for the 1st year students of Russian philology. Students should have a basic knowledge of Czech linguistic terminology as expected after graduating
