Course content
1. Romanticism in Ukrainian poetry. 2. Russian ?trijcja? 3. Fable and fable-writers. 4. Romanticism in Ukrainian prose. 5. Drama after Kotliarevsky. 6. Burlesque-realistic prose. 7. Realism and realistic writers. 8. Pantalejmon Kulish - Čorna rada 9. Ivan Franko and critical realism. 10. Lesja Ukrainka. 11. Taras Shevchenko. 12. The basic tendencies in literature at the beginning of the 20th century. 13. Credit test.

Learning outcomes
This course further develops the students´ knowledge of Ukrainian literature. We shall focus on the literature of the period of 18th and 19th centuries, i.e. the so called New literature. In this period the literature underwent a significant development of its qualities and accessibility to readers, literature is becoming a useful tool for expressing philosophical, scientific and political views. Also at this period various genres and currents were formed, especially romanticism and realism. The central genres were: fable at the end of the 18th century and poetry, prose, burlesque-realistic prose, drama, critical realism in the 19th century. Special attention is paid to the following prominent writers: I. Kotliarevsky, Ivan Frank, T. Shevchenko, P. Kulish, H. Kvtika-Osnovianenko, L. Ukrainka and others. One hour in each session will be dedicated to reading and interpretation of selected literary works.
students learn the characteristics of emerging literary styles in Ukraine, basics of drama, meaning of schools and philosophical writings
Prerequisites
Knowledge of the Old Ukrainian literature, good knowledge of literary terminology and genres, understanding the European literary context and having completed the previous course on Ukrainian literature, KSU/UL1.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written exam

Preparedness for each lesson, reading the assigned texts, understanding the European context of Ukrainian literature. Passing the credit test.
