Course content
1. Chronicles of the 14th ? 18th centuries. 2. 1st grammar books. (Smotrycky) 3. Religious literature. 4. The European significance of Kiev-Mohyla Academy. 5. Journalistic literature of the 17th century. 6. Polemic literature of the 17th century. 7. Cossack annals. 8. Dramatic works by Feofan Prokopovych. 9. Vertepna drama and its significance. 10. Lyric works by baroque Ukrainian writers. 11. Philosophical tractates and their themes. 12. H.S.Skovoroda: philosopher, pedagogue, fable writer. 13. Credit test.

Learning outcomes
This cycle of lectures presents the students with Ukrainian literature of the 14th to 18th centuries. We shall focus on chronicles which cover various genres ? short stories, legends, annals etc. We shall also discuss translated literature. From the second half of the 16th century, i.e. from the book printing, we can trace first attempts to write down Ukrainian grammar. At this period the religious literature was spreading more than ever before. We shall also discuss the European significance of Kiev-Mohyla Academy and its contribution to Ukrainian culture.
Students will understand the features of separate emerging styles in Ukrainian literature, the themes in baroque Ukrainian literature, beginnings of Ukrainian drama and the significance of brethren schools and philosophical tractates.
Prerequisites
An ability to read and interpret Ukrainian literary text.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written exam

Regular fulfilling of the assigned tasks, reading the assigned texts, awareness of the European context of Ukrainian literature, passing the credit test.
