Course content
1. The subject of syntax. Syntactic units. 2. Elementary and non-elementary syntactic units. 3. Types of syntactic relations. 4. Forms of syntactic relations. 5. Semantic-syntactic relations in a simple, complex and compound sentence. 6. Main aspects of a sentence. 7. Syntactic categories of a sentence. 8. Sentence constituents. Multiple sentence constituents. 9. Main sentence constituents. 10. Secondary sentence constituents. 11. Classification of sentences according to modality. Positive and negative sentence. 12. Monopredicative sentences. Types of monopredicative sentences. 13. Credit test.

Learning outcomes
The first part of the course on Syntax of Ukrainian language presents the students with the current theoretical and methodological aspects of the present-day Ukrainian syntax. We shall define the basic syntactical unit, which has to be differentiated from syntagmatic groups of words, sentence constituents and basic types of sentences. We shall deal with terminology and concepts connected to types and formation of syntactic relations, main and secondary sentence constituents, types of sentences according to the predicate etc. In the seminars we shall analyse concrete language material which should help the students to understand more deeply the syntactic system of Ukrainian simple clause.
Students will understand the system of Ukrainian syntax. Special attention is paid to syntactical analysis of simple sentences of all types.
Prerequisites
An advanced knowledge of Ukrainian language and grammar.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam, Written exam

Regular active attendance, doing the assigned tasks, consulting the recommended literature and preparing grammar exercises Written test on basic types of syntagmatic relations, sentence constituents and simply sentence. Syntactic analysis of phrases and simple clauses. Knowledge of Ukrainina interpunction. Written credit test on syntactical analysis of a text.
