Course content
1. Typical genres of the 1940?s and 1950?s 2. Symbolism and patriotism of Pavel Tychyna 3. Olena Teliha 4. Neo-classicism Maksyma Rylského 5. Socialist realism 6. Ukrainian national revival of the 20th century and the context of repressed authors 7. The Generation of 60?s 8. Samizdat and tamizdat 9. Prominent writers ? O.Honchar, L.Kostenko 10. Postmodernism 11. Author in emigration (The New York Group, Chicago) 12. Prominent authors of the present-day literature (M. Matios, S. Procjuk, J. Andruchovytch) 13. Credit test.

Learning outcomes
This course on modern Ukrainian literature covers the period of 1940s to 1990s. Ukrainian literature of this period is seen as a blend of modernism, traditional realism, romanticism and later also postmodernism. We shall mostly discuss the war and post-war literature, censured literature and literature influenced by the Soviet ideology. Special attention is paid to the revived interest in the work of realistic and romantic authors. We shall also discuss the generation of 60?s and literary circles that influenced the cultural atmosphere in Ukraine in the given period.
Understanding the modern Ukrainian literature.
Prerequisites
A good knowledge of Ukrainian language (B2). Knowledge of basic movements in Ukrainian literature of the 18th and 19th century gained from the previous courses on literature.
