Course content
Modernism - Mlada muza (M. Voronyj) a Ukrajinska chata (O. Oles) 1. beginnings of modernism. 2. Innovations and antitradicionalism in literature. 3. Forma versus content. 4. Psychologism, individuality, symbols in works of ukrainian modernism. 5. Authors, works and styles. 6. Impresionism. 7. Expresionism. 8. Neoromantism. 9. Neoklasicism. 10. Symbolism. 11. Mykola Voronyj, Mychajlo Kocjubynskyj, Mychajlo Semenko. 12. Vasyl Stefanyk, Vasyl Stus.

Learning outcomes
This course is dedicated to the development of Ukrainian literature in the period of modernism. We shall discuss the reaction of modernist literature to the elements of realism and romanticism as well as the historical context and the influence of development in culture and state. We shall focus on the movements and aesthetical streams in the Ukrainian literature of the given period and on the prominent representatives from each movement. Understanding this mosaic of contexts can help the students to understand the origins of current Ukrainian literature.
Understanding the modern and modernist Ukrainian literature.
Prerequisites
A good knowledge of Ukrainian language (B2). Knowledge of basic movements in Ukrainian literature of the 18th and 19th century gained from the previous courses on literature.
