Course content
1-2. Language representation of men and women as a basic universal category of language structure and usage. Formal means expressing feminine and masculine. 3-4. The image of woman and man in Ukrainian and Czech languages. Specific features of nomination of persons of masculine and feminine sex. Nomina agentis. Problem of translation. 5-6. Gender stereotypes. The image of woman and man in Ukrainian and Czech system of antroponyms. 7-8. Man and woman in Ukrainian and Czech phraseology and paremiology. 9. The image of man and woman in Ukrainian and Czech mass media. 10. Masculinity and femininity. The gender identity and differences in communication. Masculine and feminine language strategies. 11. Language discrimination and sexism in the context of gender linguistics. 12. The question of formation of political correctness and the problematic of language tolerance. 13. Test with analytical exercises.

Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to present the students with new paradigms of language and culture studies, especially with the modern approaches to language from gender perspective and with methods of current gender studies. Special attention is paid to the origin and development of gender linguistics, its basic terminology and relations between language and culture, social and lingual elements of gender stereotypes and the status of men and women as reflected in language. We shall also focus on concepts such are patriarchy, patriarchal culture, androcentrism vs. sexism of language, gender symmetry and asymmetry in language of various linguistic levels of language, gender stereotype, gender identity. We shall also inspect concepts such as grammatical gender, natural gender and gender from the point of view of language system, socio-linguistics and communication, also the problematic of discrimination of women in language and aspects related to political correctness and its applications in Ukrainian and Czech language. We shall persistently apply the comparative approach.
An ability to understand analytically and critically the linguistic description of gender stereotypes in language and communication.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of Ukrainian, at least B1 level of the European Framework of Reference for Languages

Assessment methods and criteria
Student performance

Regular attendance, doing the assigned tasks, consulting dictionaries and other sources. Written analysis of gender stereotypes and language means of identification of woman in Ukrainian and Czech languages. An ability to use correctly the language means expressing identification of men and women in Ukrainian and Czech, gender inflection.
