1. Lexicology as a linguistic discipline and its relationship to other disciplines. 2. Concrete and abstract meaning of words. The literal and figurative meaning of the word. Metonymy, metaphor, synecdoche. Homonyms Paronyms. 3. Synonyms, types of synonyms, creation of synonyms, synonym series. 4. Antonyms Types of antonyms. Antithesis- 5. Vocabulary of the contemporary Ukrainian written language from the point of view of origin. 6. Vocabulary of the contemporary Ukrainian literary language in terms of active and passive usage. Historicisms. Archaisms. Irregularities. 7. Vocabulary of the modern Ukrainian language from the point of view of the sphere of use. Professional lexicon. Terms. Dialectisms. Slangisms. Jargonisms. 8. Vocabulary of the contemporary Ukrainian language from the point of view of stylistic differentiation. Types of style and their main features. 9. Phraseology. Learning outcomes
|
The aim of this course is to analyse lexeme as the basic unit of lexical level of language and the essence of lexical meaning. Students will broaden their knowledge of Ukrainian lexicon from the point of view of its formation, origin, frequency of usage, and archaisms, historicism, standard and substandard expressions, professionalisms and slang. Special attention is paid to the differentiation of concepts of polysemy and homonymy. We shall work with prosaic texts and analyse selected lexemes as synonyms, anonyms, paronyms, metaphors, synecdoche or metonymy. During the lessons we shall also compare the Ukrainian texts with Czech material in order to point out the interlinguistic homonymy. At the end of the course we shall deal with lexicography, including the description of its history from the first Ukrainian dictionaries till the most modern ones.
Students will get familiar with the semantic structure of Ukrainian language in both synchronic, diachronic aspects, its main tendencies and trends. They will also obtain an important base for acquisition of Ukrainian language.

A practical knowledge of Ukrainian, at least A level of the European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Oral exam, Written exam
* Regular attendance, max. 2 absences. * Conditions for obtaining the credit in summer semester: A written test on terminology and lexical analysis of text. * Conditions for passing the oral exam in summer semester: Proving the theoretical knowledge in the oral exam. Practical task in a text.
