Course content
1. Ukrainian linguistics of the end of the 17th century to the beginning of the 20th century. Basic schools and terminology. 2. ?The Pedigree Theory? and the ?Theory of Wave? in the Ukrainian linguistics of the 19th century. 3. The problem of periodization in the development of Ukrainian language. 4. Comparative and historic analysis of Ukrainian language. Prominent scholars and work. The Charkivs?ka linguistic school. 5. O.O. Potebna and the questions of philosophy of language and linguoculturology. 6. The grammar theory by O.O. Potebna. The questions of the origin of Ukrainian language according to O.O. POtebna. 7. Nationalization and denationalization of language according to O.O.Potebna. 8. The aesthetic function of word according to O.O. Potebna. 9. The grammar tradition of Ukrainian linguistics in the end of the 19th century to to the 20th century. The grammar by I. Mohylhytskoi and M. Luhkai. 10. The works by M. Maksymovych and their influence on the Ukraininan and Slavonic linguistics. 11. Ivan Franko and his influence on Ukrainian linguistics. Ukrainian lexicography and terminography. B. Hrinchenko, D. Javornyc?kyj, I. Ohijenko. 12. Factors and directions of dynamics of language sub-systems of the Ukrainian language at the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. The problems of norm and codification. 13. Defence of the papers. Credit test.

Learning outcomes
This theoretical course is closely related to the previous course Chapters from Ukrainian Linguistics 1. The aim of this course is to present the students with the Ukrainian linguistics of 17th ? 1950?s, with the basic schools and prominent scholars. We shall focus on the question of the norm and codification of Ukrainian language fixed at the beginning of the 20th century, the development of terminological systems in Ukrainian and fixing the stylistic levels. We shall also discuss the basic dynamic processes in Ukrainian language at the beginning of the 20th century and their interpretation in the works by prominent Ukrainian and other linguists from this period. Students will get familiar with the most important lexicographical projects from this period and about Ukrainian philology abroad.
Broadening the theoretical knowledge gained during the courses on the system of Ukrainian language and its development. Special attention is paid to the role of Ukrainian linguistics in the development and survival of the Ukrainian language and the works relevant to the Ukrainian linguistics and its influence on Slavic and world linguistics.
Prerequisites
An advanced knowledge of Ukrainian language and its norms, basis of historical phonetics, word-formation, lexicology, grammar, syntax and stylistics.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam, Written exam

Regular attendance, submitting in time the assigned tasks, individual work with scholarly articles and literature in Ukrainian. Writing a paper on one of the topics from the syllabus and oral presentation of the paper. Ability to work with scholarly sources. Credit test.
