Course content
The aim of the discipline is to provide students with a comprehensive overview of the basic knowledge of modern translation science, its history and its most important representatives. In the course of the lectures, students will receive information about the development of modern linguistic theory of translation constituted as an interdisciplinary discipline from linguistic and literary sources. The subject will be the world schools of translation studies (USA - E.Nida, Leipzig School, Paris School, Moscow and Leningrad Schools, etc.), special attention will be paid to the development and current state of translation studies in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The basic principles of translation criticism, issues related to the problems of equivalence and adequacy of translation, pragmatics of translation, etc. In the seminars, students will have the opportunity to look into various possible ways of applying the acquired knowledge in translation practice, using the material of both closely related Slavic languages (Czech and Russian) and genetically and typologically different languages (Czech and English, Czech and German).
