Course content
1. Slavonic studies as a scholarly field. Methods of studying cognate languages in 19th and 20th cent. linguistics. 2. History of Czech and Slovak linguistic Slavonic studies. 3. principles and regularities in language development, convergence and divergence. Relative chronology of development of Slavonic languages. Position of Slavonic languages among Indo-European languages. Slavonic protolanguage, its development from Indo-European language. 4. Ethnic genesis of Slavs. Slavs´ contacts with speakers of Baltic protolanguage. Issue of so-called Baltic-Slavonic unity. 5. Slavonic protolanguage: periods, influence upon developmet, prosody, changes in phonetics, phonology - principles, vocabulary. 6. Three branches of Slavonic protolanguage - development, characteristics, peculiarities. 7. Old Slavonic language - language systems, Old Church Slavonic - its influence upon other Slavonic languages, esp. Russian. Historical written documents and relics. Glagolitic script and Cyrillic. 8. Dialects of Old Russian. Birth of three East-Slavonic languages. Features of Modern Russian, Ukrainian, Belorussian. 9. Development of graphic system and orthography of East-Slavonic languages.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the current discipline is to present essential facts in the course of the historical development of language which may facilitate in understanding its contemporary situation. Attention is paid to the comparison with equivalent phenomena in Czech or other Slavonic languages. Specific attention is paid to important changes in phonology and phonetics and grammar, then to interpretation of the language situation occurring in East-European Slavonic territory from the Christianization in the 10th cent. to 18th. cent. when modern Russian literary language came into being, then to characterisation of important periods in Modern Russian development until present. An outline of its development in lexical system as well as orthography and specific features of Russian dialects wil be provided, too.
Overview of the development of Russian language with respect to the historical development of Slavonic languages in general. Fundamental principles of the development, rules, shifts, methods of diachronic study of language.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of Russian language corresponding at least to C1 level. In case of foreign students, corresponding knowledge of Czech language. Knowledge of general linguistics as well as partial linguistic disciplines corresponding to the level of Mgr. study od Russian philology at Czech university. General knowledge of the issues in humanities and social sciences.

Oral exam
