Course content
|
01. The phenomenon of Jewishness in the history of Russia. The languages of the Jewish culture in Russia (Russian, , Hebrew, Yiddish) 02. Jews in Rus? till the 18th century. 03. Jews in Russia in the 19th century, tsarist policy towards them and their every day life in the populated areas and outside them (Petersburg, Moscow), traditional Judaism vs. the question of assimilation, the approach of Russian intelligentsia towards Jews. 04. The border of the 19th and 20th centuries, the anti-Semitism explosive period. 05. Jews and the revolution of 1917. 06. Jews in the 1920?s. The phenomenon of Jewish theatres. 07. Stalin repressions of the 1930?s and their effect on Jews, antireligious five-year plan. 08. The Second World War and the period of Stalin?s death: fighting the cosmopolitism. 09. The Khrushchev era, the Babi Jar affair and its reflection in culture. 10. Emigration to Israel in the 1970?s and 1980?s. 11. The present status.

Learning outcomes
|
This course aims to present the students with the outline of Jewish culture in Russia in the long-time perspective covering the period since Middle ages until today. Special attention is paid to the relationships between the Jewish community and the Russian society, the changes of the Russian official state policy towards Jews (both before and after the year 1917), as well as to the everyday contacts of Jews witht the non-Jews. We shall also focus on the approaches of Russian intelligentsia towards Jews and especially the various attempts of Jewish authors to find their own identity among the Jewish and Russian cultures.
Students will acquire an insight into the problematic of coexistence and conflicts of the Jewish community in Russia in the Russian history, especially in the aspect of inter-cultural communication.

This course requires a basic knowledge of Russian history and culture, especially of the modern period.
