Course content
|
Definition of interpreting - types, history, models of an interpreter's work, translation vs. interpreting, interpreting competence. Consecutive interpreting - its specifics, interpreting notes in theory and practice. Simultaneous interpreting - its specifics, interpreting strategies, language and speech compression. Cognitive processes and interpreting - memory, practice of memory exercises, language practice, improvisation, split attention effect, distance from the speaker, association, estimation, anticipation. Training institutions - interpreting and the EU, Institute of Translation Studies at the Philosophical Faculty of Charles University in Prague, European Master´s in Conference Interpreting, court interpreting, JTP (Union of Interpreters and Translators), ToP (Translation and Interpreting) etc.

Learning outcomes
|
This is a follow-up course to Introduction to the Theory of Translation. It aims to provide students with both the fundamentals of the theory of interpreting (definition of interpreting, the specifics of an interpreter's work, consecutive vs. simultaneous interpreting etc.) and the practical skills necessary for interpreting (memory exercises, split attention effect, interpreting notes, working with a text etc.).
Graduates will be able to perceive the interpreting process in its complexity, in the frame of translation theory, and they will be able to work actively with their cognitive and linguistic prerequisites for interpreting.

Prerequisites

A bachelor's degree in the field of Russian language, knowledge of Russian corresponding at least to B2 level.
