Course content
|
Morphology of a text: formula, motive, plot, narrator, formal application, genre, style. Russian school of formalists. Semiotics and structuralism of Tartu-Moscow semiotic school. M. M. Bakhtin and criticism of formalism. The concept of dialogue, polyphony and narrator.

Learning outcomes
|
The course is dedicated to the development of Russian literary theory, which can be divided into 2 streams. The first one is historic poetics which focuses on a description of morphology of a text: the formula, motive, plot, narrator, formal features, genre, style. We shall discuss the main scholars A. N. Veselovskij and V.V. Vinogradov, the Russian school of formalists, semiotics and structuralism. The second stream is a hisorico-philosophical conception and was represented by A. A. Potebnya, M. M. Bakhtin, who criticised the formalists and elaborated a conception of dialogue, polyphony, narrator and renaissance aesthetical principle. We shall discuss the scholars and their theories both with the diachronic and synchronic approaches.
An insight into the development of literary theory, knowledge of basic issues and terminology of the Russian literary theory.

Prerequisites
|
A knowledge of Literary theory as required on the BA level of study. Knowledge of history of the Russian literature of the 19th and 20th centuries. Completion of the course Selected Chapters from Russian Literature.
